Elemental Music proudly announces the ultimate remastered edition of one of the most acclaimed records in the history of Soul music: People ... Hold On, the second album by former Temptations’ vocalist Eddie Kendricks which was originally released in the Spring of 1972 on the Tamla imprint of Motown Records. This sensational release was a concept album dedicated to black America. Addressing the truth of African-American life and aspiration in this time of social and personal change, it was an album tailor-made for the expanding social and political consciousness within the community –and it also resonated mightily with the many interested outside listeners who were fuelling the rise of progressive black FM radio, and the eclectic, open-minded club underground of young black, Latino and gay/gay-friendly outcasts. The floor-shaking rhythmic builds and wild, repeated emotional flights of “Girl, You Need a Change of Mind” are frequently cited as the single groundbreaking model for the breaks and changes of disco music. Years before the arrival of the maxi-single on 12 inch format, DJs from the east coast club scene as David Mancuso or Danny Krivit, would play tracks directly from the album and began to spin “Girl You Need a Change of Mind” because of its length (7:33 min.). People ... Hold On had been out for over 6 months before radio caught on. But it eventually rose to #13 R&B in the early months of 1973. Its success in the clubs would lay the groundwork for his upcoming #1 Pop & R&B smash, “Keep on Truckin’” (1973). Eddie’s touring band, the Washington DC-based Young Senators, played on the album almost in its entirety, and they turned in extra nasty rhythm work on “Eddie’s Love” and “Let Me Run into Your Lonely Heart” to propel Kendricks’ uniquely emotional delivery; together they also made some loping funk out of “If You Let Me”, a late Sixties Jimmy Ruffin chestnut. Even the Funk Brothers cut, “Date with the Rain,” the sole album track written and produced by Chicago transplant Bobby Miller, survives more than 40 years later in the club underground as an early-morning floor-filler.
