“These recordings were never going to be released, but as soon as I heard them, I knew I had to do everything in my power to make these performances public for the first time in almost 50 years. I first discovered the tapes in July 2012, while on a New York business trip. Upon first hearing these recordings I was mesmerized by Jimmy Giuffre’s style of play. It was nothing like the LPs I had collected from his years in Capitol, Atlantic, or Verve. These performances were free, adventurous, and unexpected. As Bob Blumenthal mentions in his liner notes, these recordings also mark a reappearance of the tenor saxophone for Giuffre, who had been playing the clarinet almost exclusively. George Klabin recorded these two concerts in 1965 while a student at Columbia University and the jazz programming director at WKCR-FM. These recordings aired only once on his radio show and remained tucked away until now”. Zev Feldman
