FREDDIE KING – TEXAS CANNONBALL
First released in 1972, Freddie King's Texas Cannonball follows the thread of his previous album Getting Ready, but adds a stronger rock feel to his Texas blues foundation. Widely considered a masterpiece of the genre, the album features scorching instrumental solos and some of King’s most expressive vocal work since his legendary recordings from the 1950s and early 1960s. The set is composed mostly of covers—brilliant interpretations of songs by Howlin’ Wolf, Elmore James, Leon Russell, Bill Withers, Isaac Hayes, and John Fogerty (whose “Lodi” is transformed into the grooving “Lowdown in Lodi”). King’s own “You Was Wrong” stands tall among them. In 2007, the Houston Chronicle named Texas Cannonball one of the 75 essential Texas blues albums.
