Limited gatefold edition of 180-gram white vinyl

A legendary and controversial album due to its fusion of electric blues with psychedelic elements.

Featuring a fantastic backing band comprised of highly talented and experienced studio players: guitarist Pete Cosey (known for his work with Miles Davis and the  Sun Ra Arkestra), Rotary Connection’s guitarist Phil Upchurch (who also worked with Stan Getz, Jack McDuff, Jimmy Smith, and Donny Hathaway), guitarist Roland Faulkner (who also collaborated with Lionel Hampton and Sarah Vaughan), Chess bassist Louis Satterfield (collaborator of B.B King and Ramsey Lewis), future Earth, Wind & Fire producer Charles Stepney on organ, Chess saxophonist Gene Barge, and drummer Morris Jennings (known for his work with Woody Herman and Ramsey Lewis).

The album includes classic Waters numbers such as “I’m Your Hoochie Coochie Man,” “Manish Boy” and “I Just Want to Make Love to You” as well as a great cover of the Roling Stones’ “Let’s Spend the Night Together.”

While some contemporary critics saw this album as sacrilegious to the gospel genre, fellow stars like Jimi Hendrix praised it, and Electric Mud is now considered an overlooked classic. Public Enemy’s Chuck D and others have hailed it as an early influence on hip-hop. It has also been extensively sampled by artists like The Black Keys and Gorillaz.

Released in 1968, Electric Mud sold 150,000 copies within six weeks and was the first of Muddy Waters’ albums to make it onto a Billboard chart.
